Chapter 8
Fax Viewer

The Fax Viewer gives you a number of tools for manipulating the fax image you are viewing. You can use the Fax Viewer to view, print, rearrange, and edit fax documents. The Fax Viewer includes the ability to use a TWAIN compliant scanner to scan in documents to add to an existing fax or create a new fax document.

These functions are available from the Fax Viewer Button bar and from the menu commands. If the Button bar is not visible, the command View > Show Button Bar enables it.

Fax Viewer Button Bar
The Fax Viewer Button Bar contains commonly used functions when dealing with faxes. In addition, when the Annotation function is enabled there is a second Annotation Button bar for markup functions. You can select between large and small icons on the button bars by selecting the
View > Use Large Buttons command.

Fax Viewer Menus
You can use the Fax Viewer menu commands by pulling down the File, View, and Markup menus from within the Fax Viewer, and selecting a command.

Viewing Faxes
To view a fax file from the Fax Viewer, click on the Open Fax File button on the button bar or select the
File > Open command. The Open window displays, allowing you to select the directory where the fax files are stored.

You can also view faxes from the InBox, OutBox or File Cabinet windows, by double-clicking on the desired entry or click on the View button located under the menu bar.

The Viewer window (Figure 8-1) opens and displays the selected fax.

Rotating Faxes
You can select to rotate faxes displayed in the Fax Viewer. The options include rotating the fax 90 degrees to the right or left or flipping the page 180 degrees.

Anti-Aliasing
You can use anti-aliasing to improve the readability of your faxed documents. The anti-aliasing feature will soften the edges of the text and graphics which will improve the readability of the fax. Anti-aliasing will only improve the fax when displayed on screen.

Thumbnails
You can display the fax pages in a "thumbnail" or miniature mode for easy page manipulation. To select thumbnail mode in the Fax Viewer either click on the Thumbnail button on the button bar or select
View > Thumbnail.

Using Zoom when Viewing a Fax
When using the Fax Viewer to display a fax document you can select from a selection of preset zoom levels or enter a custom zoom level.

The Fax Viewer has six preset zoom levels - 200%, 100%, 50%, 25%, 12.5%, and 6.25%. A higher percentage shows more readable details, and a lower percentage shows more of the fax page on the screen. You can also set intermediate, custom zoom levels by typing the zoom level in directly.

Fit to Window displays the file as large as possible while still fitting within the window either side-to-side (Width), or top-to-bottom (Height)

To change the zoom level select either a preset level from the zoom dropdown on the button bar or type in a custom level. You can also select the Zoom, Zoom In, Zoom Out, and Fit Window (Height or Width) options from the View menu.

Reverse Video
You can enable the Reverse Video command by selecting
View > Reverse Video. This causes the Fax Viewer to display a fax as a black image with white lettering.

Printing Faxes
Click on the Print button located on the Viewer Button bar, or select the
File > Print menu command. The Print dialog opens. Select the desired print parameters and click OK to print the fax file.

Saving Faxes
To save a fax file click on the Save File button or select
File > Save As. Specify the directory and filename in which you want to save the .FAX file.

You can add keywords or comments to the file with the Options button. Enter the desired keyword or comments and click OK to return to the Save As window. Click OK to save the file. The file is stored in the File Cabinet unless otherwise specified.

Annotating Faxes
With the Fax Viewer's annotation features, you can add lines and arrows, circle pertinent information or use other shapes, insert text using any font, and modify the annotation colors. Once you have marked up the fax, if it is something you want to save, use the Merge With Image command, and it saves the changes as part of the fax file. If you wish to discard your changes, you can select the Revert to Saved option under the File menu.

Drawing Tools
The Fax Viewer includes various drawing tools for annotating or marking up a fax. The tools include functions for drawing lines with and without arrows, freehand drawing, rectangles, ovals and polygons. You can select a specific tool from the annotation tool bar or from the Markup menu.

You can use the Color button on the annotation button bar to control the fill color and line width and color of objects.

Inserting Text Objects
You can insert text onto a fax page by selecting the Text command from the Markup menu or by selecting the Insert Text button on the annotation button bar. You can use the Font button on the annotation button bar or
Markup > Font command to select the desired font type size and attributes.

Inserting Bitmaps
You can bring in a graphic file in .PCX or .BMP format using the Insert Bitmap command. You can then save the fax file using a different name, or use the Merge With Image command to save the bitmap as part of the existing fax.

Manipulating Fax Pages
The Fax Viewer allows you to manipulate individual fax pages in a fax document. You can rearrange pages, delete individual pages and add additional pages to an existing fax document.

To rearrange fax pages use the selection tool on the annotation button bar and click and drag the page you wish to move. When you have the page in the location you want it, release the mouse button to "drop" the page into it's new location.

Scanning Images
You can scan hardcopy documents into the Fax Viewer using the Scan command from the File Menu. This gives you the ability to scan existing documents into the Fax Viewer for editing or transmission. The Fax Viewer supports TWAIN compliant scanners.

You can use the scanner support built into the Fax Viewer to scan and send faxes. To scan and send a fax you need to open the Fax Viewer and select File > New to create a new document and then File > Scan. This will bring up the TWAIN scanner window supplied by your scanner manufacturer. Make sure to set the scanning resolution to 200 dpi and the mode to Line Art. Select Scan to scan the page into the Fax Viewer. Once the page is scanned you can repeat the steps for additional pages (Scanners with Automatic Document Feeders will scan all pages placed in the ADF). Once you've completed the scanning of pages you need to select File > Print Setup and choose the FaxTalk printer driver. Then select File > Print. The Send a Fax dialog will then appear and at this point you can select the recipients, whether to attach a coversheet, and the send time and date. Click send to complete the send operation.

Importing Pages
The Fax Viewer supports the ability to import Bitmap files into a fax. You can import files that are either .PCX, .BMP, or .FAX file format. Use the Import command from the File menu to select the file you wish to import.

Exporting Pages
You can export pages from a fax file for use with other applications. The Fax Viewer supports exporting in either .PCX, .BMP, or .FAX file format. Use the Export command under the File menu to select the file format desired.
