Chapter 3
Quick Start

This chapter is intended to give a brief description of how to send and receive a fax. It does not cover all of the sending and receiving features, but provides enough information to understand the basics. For a detailed description of how to use the FaxTalk Plus send features, see Chapter 4, Sending Faxes. For detailed information regarding receiving faxes, see Chapter 6, Receiving Faxes.

Now that you have installed FaxTalk Plus for Windows software and have your fax modem installed and configured, you are ready to begin sending and receiving faxes.

Sending a Fax
You send faxes from a Windows application using the Print command. This means you do not have to exit your application and go into FaxTalk Plus, so sending a fax is as easy as printing.

To send a fax:

  1. Open a Windows application. Create a test document to send, or open an existing document created in a Windows application.
  2. Select FaxTalk Plus for Windows as the desired printer (usually performed in Print Setup). Select the File > Print command. The Print dialog box displays FaxTalk Plus as the selected printer just as it does when you are sending the document to your printer. Click OK.

The Send a Fax window displays (Figure 3-1).

  3. The current time and date display in the schedule area. To send a fax now, do not change these settings.
  4. Indicate whether you want a coversheet generated and attached to the fax when it is sent, by clicking on the check box next to Generate in the Coversheet section. Click the Edit button next to Generate to fill in the coversheet. The Edit Coversheet window opens (Figure 3-2).

FaxTalk Plus will fill in the sender's name, number and company information automatically when the document is sent. Fill in the other information and click OK to return to the Send a Fax window. For information about how to set up a coversheet with a logo and create templates, see Chapter 4, Sending Faxes.

  5. Click the New... button at the bottom of the Send a Fax window. The New Recipient window displays over the Send a Fax window (Figure 3-3).

Enter the First and Last name, Company name and the Fax Phone Number for the person to whom you intend to send the fax. The recipient information is added to the current phonebook unless you specify otherwise.

  6. Click OK to return to the Send a Fax window. The recipient name you just added appears in the Recipient list. Click the Send button at the bottom of the window to send the fax now.

When the fax has been successfully sent, your system will beep once. If your system beeps twice, the fax did not send correctly, see Chapter 4, Sending Faxes for more details about re-sending the fax.

Congratulations! You have successfully sent your first FaxTalk Plus for Windows fax.

Receiving a Fax
As long as your computer and fax modem are running, and FaxTalk Plus is loaded with Auto-answer set (or you select
Modem > Answer Now or click the Answer Now button), you can receive faxes day or night. You can receive faxes while you are working in other applications or when you are not at the computer.

FaxTalk Plus does the receiving work for you. Have a friend send you a two or three page document. You can monitor the incoming information from the FaxTalk Plus for Windows Status bar located at the bottom of the FaxTalk Plus window.

Once the fax has been received, open the InBox window by double-clicking on the InBox icon at the bottom of the FaxTalk Plus program window.

All new faxes that have been received and not yet deleted are listed. From the InBox window you can view the fax by double-clicking on the appropriate entry. The Fax Viewer application will load and display the fax.

From the Fax Viewer window you can manipluate pages, rotate, zoom in and out and reverse the colors in the document as well as add annotations. For more detailed information about working with received faxes, see Chapter 6, Receiving Faxes and Chapter 7, Fax Viewer.
